Edward Hitchcock letter to Sylvester Hovey, 1831 October 4
Description:
A letter to Sylvester Hovey in which Edward Hitchcock expresses his gladness that Hovey's trip to Europe is thus far going well. Hitchcock also writes about Amherst College's preparations for the upcoming school year, discusses the size of the incoming freshman class, and mentions finding deposits of gold in southern Vermont. The similarity of the Vermont gold to gold found in the Carolinas and Georgia makes Hitchcock believe it may range throughout North America.
