- Description:

This pamphlet, titled "The First Game", contains a brief story about the origination of the game of basketball. It was created by Springfield College, at the time the International YMCA Training School, for the purposes of raising money for the school. The image on the cover is a version of the original drawing by Samuro Genzaburo Ishikawa, Class of 1892, used in the announcement of the creation of the game of basketball in the Triangle in January, 1892. Ishikawa was one of the original members of the secretarial class that Naismith created the game of basketball for. In the pamphlet, it explains how the game was once referred to as "peach ball" because peach baskets were used at either end of the court. These peach baskets had no hole in the bottom, so the janitor got on a ladder and got the ball down every time someone had scored a basket. Also included is a picture of the secretarial department basketball team from 1892 that contained 9 of the original players of the game and a picture of a current basketball team. At the end of the pamphlet, there is mention of how the college was in need of some major renovations as the physical condition of the school was not keeping up with the evolution of the game. The last few paragraphs discusses the current situation and encourages donation to reach the ultimate goal of raising 2 million dollars.
