  <mods:abstract>This is a photograph of Springfield College's first full-time president, Laurence L. Doggett, seated prior to commencement and looking over a program at Springfield College's 70th commencement. This photograph was taken in 1956, twenty years after Doggett retired as president of Springfield College, a position he held for just under forty years. The commencement address was given by Senator John F. Kennedy (who later became the 35th President of the United States) who was also presented with an honorary doctor of law degree from Springfield College.</mods:abstract>
  <mods:note>Doggett was Springfield College's fourth and longest tenured president and the youngest person to take the position at the College. Doggett was instrumental in developing the campus by increasing the number of students and faculty, improving and building new facilities and developing a capital fund. Doggett was also involved in developing the school's humanics philosophy which called for the education of the whole person, in spirit, mind and body. This philosophy still drives Springfield College today. Doggett retired in 1936 but remained active in the Springfield College community as evidenced by this photograph in which he is attending his 59th commencement. Doggett died in 1957 at the age of 92.</mods:note>
