Spiegel was born in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland on June 22, 1926 to Erwin and Ruth Spiegel. After his family moved to the United States, he attended Forest Hills High School (Forest Hills, NY). In 1948, he graduated from Antioch College (Yellow Springs, OH), where he majored in economics and minored in education. In the fall after graduation, he married Eleanor Durham, who was from Evanston, Illinois. Spiegel earned his master’s degree from Teachers College and his Ed.D. in Intergroup Relations from Columbia University. From 1951 through 1955, he served as the Executive Director of the International Student Association of Greater Boston. He then accepted a job as an assistant professor of human relations at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1957, Spiegel was appointed the director of the Springfield College Community Tensions Center. During this time, he also served as an associate professor of group relations at the college, where he appears to have stayed until 1965. Spiegel was a member of the American Sociological Association, the National Association of Intergroup Relations Officials, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. He participated in numerous civic organizations, such as the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and the American Friends Service Committee.
