Also known as the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction’s charter, warrant, or “Birth Certificate,” this formal certificate was likely made in 1814. John James Joseph Gourgas who served in an official, secretarial capacity for both the Sublime Grand Consistory and the Supreme Council, engrossed this official copy of the Letters of Constitution. The document is signed and sealed by Emanuel De La Motta who, on behalf of the Charleston Supreme Council (today’s Supreme Council, 33°, Southern Jurisdiction), constituted and established the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction’s Supreme Council and installed its first officers on August 5, 1813. The Masonic titles that appear below De La Motta’s signature are in the handwriting of Sampson Simson, the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction’s first Lieutenant Grand Commander and second Sovereign Grand Commander.
