Clint misses Rhea and reassures her that she is first in his heart. Many things are uncertain now and unclear, but he plans to return her as soon as he is able. It's been almost a year since he arrived overseas, and one year has felt like five in terms of making him older and wiser. He applied for transfer to the regular Army Dental Corps from the Reserve Corps, but at this point he doesn't think it will be granted. When he returns home he thinks he will look for a new place to work since there are aspects of his prior employment that he does not like. He writes of the many French towns that have been wiped off of maps and reduced to rubble, and hopes to see the same done on German soil. He worries about his father's health and asks her to keep his future plans to herself for now.
