Martha thanks Rhea for her letter of sympathy and writes about how her husband will be missed. She was surprised to hear of Rhea's engagement to Clinton, and agrees that their difference in creed would be the only obstacle, but Martha thinks Rhea would make a "splendid Presbytarian." She thinks that Clinton will soon hear about his father's death and take it very hard, although Mrs. Gibson thinks that he may look at it differently now that he has been through so much. She writes that although her husband's illness was long, it was painless, and he always looked at his condition in a philosophical way. She is doing her best to pick up the threads of her life and carry on, and she would like Rhea to write to her about her plans.
