Clint is writing from a field hospital operating room, where he has the night shift. There is a shortage of field surgeons so some of the dental surgeons have been called in to act as anaesthetists. The extra work leaves little time for food and rest, but at least one life has been saved by shortening the time it took to operate. He describes the wounded soldiers they have operated on, as well as the surprised German soldiers who were told there were not many Americans involved in the war and seem "quite contented to be out of Germany and away from the fight." He writes about his lack of mail, an idea that he will elaborate on later, and how glad he and the other men are to see the American nurses in the hospital with them.
