Martha writes to her son to tell him of his father's death and the deteriorating health that led to his passing. "This does not lessen the heartache to come, when we long for the touch of a vanished hand and the sound of a voice that is still." She does not know how she will bear the loneliness that comes from his death. She writes about the funeral and the songs that were sung. Frank has come home but she does not think he has been discharged yet and he wants to go back to school. Financially, they have enough to get by for now.
