Brent received his father's letter with the criticism for his poem of April 15th, and discusses some of it. He writes that his characterization of Christ suffering with the men on the battlefield came as a result of seeing so many images of him in France. He was glad to hear his father and sister's praise of it, but he does not know how it would be taken by civilized folks back home who have not seen "torn and bleeding humanity in the grime of being ground into Mother Earth before they are really dead." These days he bears responsibilities that would frighten a man to death, but he is getting through it day by day.
