George updates Herman on how the haying has been going at home and discusses the draft selection announcements in the paper. He hasn't seen Herman's number, but Jamie is writing to Ludlow to find out his "red ink number" and he will ask about Herman's. There was a bad storm recently that did a lot of damage to the tobacco crops in Hatfield. He speculates on how long the war will be and says that he wouldn't be much use at war and somebody has to "keep the home fires burning."
