This photograph depicts the members of the Summer Session for Gymnasium Instructors of 1890 of the YMCA Training School, now Springfield College. The group portrait was taken in the Goldsmith Studio. All of the men sitting for the portrait are wearing sports clothes or gymnastics clothes of the time. Also, on the back of the photograph a handwritten caption reads "Summer Session 1890 copy 3". Luther Halsey Gulick sits to the right of the second row. Luther Gulick was the father of physical education and recreation in the United States. Luther Gulick came to the School for Christian Workers, now Springfield College, in 1887, where he helped found the physical training department and served as its first director. This photograph is particularly interesting since it is one of the few known pictures of Dr. Gulick dressed casually without a suit.
