<mods:note>Mr. Horner, class of 1894 of the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, began his YMCA career as the General Secretary at the German Branch of the YMCA in San Francisco. He held this position from 1895 until 1898. From 1899 until 1903, he served in the Swiss National Committee at Basle, Switzerland as Traveling Secretary. From 1905 to 1906 he served with the Foreign National Committee as the General Secretary to Portugal at O Porto. And from 1907/08 until 1914 he was the General Secretary at the YMCA facilities in Lisbon, Portugal. During World War I, the World’s Committee called Rudolf Horner to work among prisoners of war. The Swiss Committee for the Association work in Portugal consented to place Horner at the disposal of the World’s Committee for the duration of the war. Thus, Horner moved to Geneva to establish WPA headquarters. His work there greatly increased the efficiency of International YMCA service to prisoners of war, and he directly oversaw the shipment of books to prisoners of war in Allied and Central Power prison camps. According to alumni records, Horner remained in Switzerland for the next ten years. He died on August 3, 1927.</mods:note>
