This photograph depicts a group portrait of attendees at the YMCA Conference of New England Secretaries standing at the steps of a big building’s door. Notice how all of men pictured are wearing hats and the two kids on left side of the picture aren’t. “The New England Secretaries’ Conference was held in Portland, Maine March 7 - 10, 1889. There was large attendance and much interest. Much credit for the success of the past year is due to the untiring effort of the State Secretary, E. A. Lawrence”. College association work was presented before delegates from 26 colleges. (Young Men's Christian Association Yearbook and official roosters, 1899, p. 53).
