Sullivan earned his bachelor's degree in business management from Springfield in 1991 and his masters in physical education in 1997. Charlie Sullivan began his career at Springfield in 1998 when he was named the men's volleyball coach and an assistant professor of physical education. He served as an assistant volleyball coach under Sean Byron during the 1996 and 1997 seasons. He then worked as an intern during July of 1998 with the USA Men's National Team in Colorado Springs, Colorado before becoming the head coach at Springfield. In 2015, Sullivan will enter his 17th season as the head coach for the men's volleyball team. At the finish of the 2013-2014 school year, his coaching record was 283 wins and 166 losses.
