This photograph depicts students from the British Society, Classes of 1902-1905 of the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College. Students stand on steps with a British Flag draped behind them. The students shown in the portrait are (top row, L to R): James A. Rath (1904), George S. Maxwell (1905), Herbert Moule (1904), John Roy (1905). (second row]: unknown, Kenneth W. Robbie (1902), James W. Stafford (1904), Roy F. Seymour (1904). [bottom row]: Porter T. Woolworth (1903), George A. McLaren (1903). The British Society at the college dates from 1903 when the students who came from any country under the British Flag, met and formed an organization call the British Students' Fraternity, “the object being to foster a fellow feeling of loyalty to the British Empire among those students coming from any part of the empire over which the sun never sets” (The Massasoit, 1909). All of the men were originally from Canada save one student from India. Each fall more members were welcomed and admitted to the fraternity. In 1909 the name changed to The British Society. The membership grew from ten in 1903 to thirty-nine by 1915.
