Description:
This photograph shows where the alley that runs alongside the ruins of the former Shawmut Congregational Church starts. The church (built 1864) was gutted by fire in 1978. Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción purchased the church and developed it into affordable homeownership condominiums and ground-floor commercial space. The housing was called Taino Tower after the Taino, the native inhabitants of Puerto Rico. The first condos went up for sale in 1991.
