View of the alleyway that separated the former Shawmut Congregational Church from Villa Victoria housing.
Description:
The Shawmut Congregational Church (built 1864) on the corner of Tremont and West Brookline Streets was gutted by fire in 1978. Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción purchased the church and developed it into affordable homeownership condominiums and ground-floor commercial space. The housing was called Taino Tower after the Taino, the native inhabitants of Puerto Rico. The first condos went up for sale in 1991. This picture shows the alleyway that separated the church from Villa Victoria housing. A chain link gate blocks the alley on both ends. Beyond the far gate is an abandoned grocery store cart.
