Ivory silk floral striped dress with very large puffed sleeves. Alternating woven stripes in leno and satin weave, stylized floral design in weave. Low and wide neckline, barely on shoulders. Edge is bound with ivory satin bias and narrow piping. Body cut slightly above natural waist, with single darts from waistband to bust, and horizontal pleating of bias fabric across bust. Two double rows of plain bias satin extend from outer edge of shoulders to center front where they curve sharply downward, ending in points just above the waistband. One double row of bias satin follows curved "princess" seams on bodice back. Sleeves are very full short, puffed. Opening is bound with bias band of ivory satin and very narrow piping. Sleeves are set into armholes in layerd box pleats rather than gathers. Armhole seams are piped. Cut in six straight panels, each 19" wide. Skirt is lined with a stiff organdy type fabric and attached to waistband in deep flat pleats. 2.5" extensions at center back are more fully pleated and gathered. Waistband of glazed cotton is 1/25" wide. Underbodice is ivory color glazed cotton, no boning. Very good example of 1830 style. Layered box pleatings on sleeves are an unusual touch to this design. Undoubtedly an expensive fabric, probably imported. The complexity of weave in fabric makes rather special Exhibited in 1970
