U.S. (United States) or American flag. Hand stitched construction. Thirteen red and white stripes with each stripe sewn together. Blue rectangular panel of fabric taking up the upper left quadrant of the flag. Thirty-four white stars sewn onto blue fabric rectangle in upper left quadrant. Thirty-four stars are sewn on in five rows with seven stars in each row unevenly spaced and one of these rows which is missing a star. The fibers (linen or canvas) of the flag are thinning and it is transparent. Left-hand border rolled so that a rope can be drawn through it for hanging. In ink on top of left-hand border is "June 13 (or 18?), 1862, MCW".
