<mods:abstract>This lantern slide, “Y.M.C.A. on Horseferry Road (London, England),” shows a large group of men seated on stage. The curtains are drawn, and decorations framing the stage include two Australian flags, the image of a kangaroo, and the image of an emu. The audience members, seated on the ground and balcony levels, have all turned in their seats to face the camera.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>This theatre was located at the Horseferry Road Australian Y.M.C.A. in London, England. General Sir William Riddell Birdwood was most likely in attendance this night, enjoying an entertaining performance by Padre Gault. AIF Headquarters were established at Horseferry Road in London. General William Riddell Birdwood (1865-1951) took part in the South African War. He spent more than thirty years in the Australian army, fighting in a total of six campaigns. Horseferry Road is a street in the City of Westminster in central London, England, running between Millbank and Greycoat Place. The road takes its name from the ferry rendered superfluous by the construction of the Lambeth Bridge in 1862. Owned by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the ferry allowed passage over the Thames, from Westminster Palace to Lambeth Palace. During World War I, the Horseferry Road Y.M.C.A. catered to as many as four thousand soldiers. This slide is part of Springfield College’s collection of lantern slides depicting Australian Y.M.C.A. war work during World War I.</mods:note>
<mods:note>Slide shows moderate deterioration; Text on border reads, "206; Australian Y.M.C.A. Historical Record Section; Horseferry Road; Aust. Y.M.C.A. opening of the grand lounge by General Birdwood."</mods:note>
