  <mods:abstract>This lantern slide, “3rd Australian Division at Y.M.C.A. near Curlu, France (September 1, 1918),” shows a group of soldiers from the 3rd Australian Division waiting to enter an Australian Y.M.C.A. established in a captured German hut near Curlu, France. There is a sign with the Y.M.C.A. emblem inscribed in the outline of Australia by the front door. Beneath the sign are the words, “Nothing for sale. Compree?” Compree is a pun on the French word “compris” (understood). The hut is situated a short distance behind the front line troops, when the operations were being conducted at Mont St Quentin. This lantern slide appears to be a cropped version of this image from the Australian War Memorial collection (http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/E03208/). This lantern slide is part of a Springfield College’s collection depicting Australian Y.M.C.A. war work during World War I.</mods:abstract>
