This lantern slide, “Watching Water Sports,” shows a large group of people sitting on a hill and watching water sports at the International Young Men’s Christian Association (now known as Springfield College). Massasoit Lake, on the edge of Springfield College, was used as a public swimming area for Springfield. Around 1904, J. H. McCurdy wrote in his boating rules, “The entire portion of the Pond east of New England R. R. Bridge can be used by the public at all hours on Sundays and legal Public Holidays, and on other days only between 5 P.M. and 8 A.M.”
