<mods:abstract>This lantern slide, “Villers-Bretonneux Advance,” shows a desolate landscape partially obscured by damage to the slide. The image appears to have been taken from a road that curves into the distance.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Villers-Bretonneux is a commune in the Somme department in Picardie in northern France. The area became famous in 1918, when the German advance on Amiens ended in the capture of the village by their tanks and infantry on 23 April. On the following day, the 4th and 5th Australian Divisions, with units of the 8th and 18th Divisions, recaptured the whole of the village and on 8 August 1918, the 2nd and 5th Australian Divisions advanced from its eastern outskirts in the Battle of Amiens. This slide is part of a series depicting Australian Y.M.C.A. war work during World War I.</mods:note>
<mods:note>Damage partially obscures the image; Text on border reads, "Australian Y.M.C.A. Historical Record Section; Villers-Bretonneux Aug 18 advanced Battn H.q. as (?)"</mods:note>
