<mods:abstract>This lantern slide, “YMCA Marquee Bombed in Sinai, Egypt” shows three men standing outside of an army tent after the camp had been bombed. The tent suffered minor damage, although one flap in front of the men has collapsed.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>In some camps, these tents were used as makeshift canteens by the YMCA secretaries. The YMCA huts followed the advance of troops. By 1916, there were thirty YMCA centers by the canal and in the Sinai. Though the proprietors of these canteens considered their work a public service and their prices very reasonable given the circumstances, the men often complained bitterly about the cost of extra food. Whatever the prices, the huts were popular, and the men valued the writing tables, free stationary and wholesome entertainment. Australian troops were located here as part of the Sinai campaign, which was fought against Turkish forces operating from Palestine over security of the Suez Canal. This slide is part of a series depicting Australian Y.M.C.A. war work during World War I.</mods:note>
<mods:note>Slide shows considerable foxing; Text on border reads, "Australian Y.M.C.A. Historical Record Section; Sinai-Mazar. YMCA Marquee bombed; 244."</mods:note>
