This lantern slide, “Red Lodge (1917),” is an illustration of two soldiers sitting and one soldier standing outside of a small open structure in the middle of the woods. The structure has a YMCA sign and counter, as if a place for soldiers to order food or beverages. However, the building appears to be much smaller than the YMCA canteens and huts normally seen in photographs from that time.

“Underhill Farm” and “Red Lodge” were the names given to two buildings on the northwestern edge of Ploegsteert Wood in Belgium. They were occupied by dressing stations sat on the edge of a cemetery. The cemetery began in June 1917 and was used until January 1918. This slide is part of a series depicting Australian Y.M.C.A. war work during World War I.
