Ensemble of black satin and lace, consisting of jacket (a) and skirt (b). The jacket (a) is fully lined, fitted with darts and boned. The peplum forms two petal-shaped points on each side in front, and one deep point in back, flared to fit over a bustle. The bottom edge and the V-neck are finished with self piping. The sleeves are long and fitted, and puffed. The bottom edge is trimmed with a riffle of wide black lace, the cuffs with ecru lace, and the neck with a doubled narrow ruffle of sawtooth-edged gauze and lace. There is a small decorative or watch pocket on the left hip. The jacket fastens up the front with seven black covered ball-shaped (crocheted?) buttons, the bottom one being sewn to the outside of the corresponding buttonhole. There is a separate white satin twill waistband inside that fastens with a hook and eye. Also sewn to the inside are dress protectors under the arms, and pads to smooth the bosom side to the armhole. The skirt (b) is long and full, with deep pleats around the sides and back(to fit over a bustle?) The front is smooth, and decorated with four horizontal rows of the same black lace as the jacket, separated by rows of tucks. The full lining is attached along the front bottom edge, and finished with a row of self accordian pleating, visible in front but hidden under the skirt pleats on the sides. The skirt fastens at the back waist with a hook and eye, and the waistband wraps around to fasten with another hook and eye at the right side.
