One patron expressed dissent by splashing a vile of ink across the work in 1924. Amidst criticism, Sargent insisted that the work drew not from any ill opinion but rather from medieval imagery, depicting Synagogue as a blindfolded figure clasping her staff as the ruins of her religious space fell among her. Sargent based the figure for this work on Michelangelo's Cumaean Sibyl. This tactic created an economic hardship by greatly diminishing commerce with Europe. With control of the Mississippi Valley, they split the Confederacy, cutting off supply routes particularly from Texas and Arkansas. In order to demonstrate the progress of this strategy, the U.S. Coast Survey published at least seven maps with the same title, “Historical Sketch of the Rebellion,“ each delineating Union military progress. By early 1864, the North had gained control of the entire Mississippi River Valley, blocked most southern ports, and had occupied much of the Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia coastal areas.","publisher_tsi":"Office of the U.S. Coast Survey","pubplace_tsi":"[S.l.]","issuance_tsi":"monographic","type_of_resource_ssim":["Cartographic"],"lang_term_ssim":["English"],"publishing_state_ssi":"published","processing_state_ssi":"complete","destination_site_ssim":["commonwealth","bpl","nblmc"],"hosting_status_ssi":"hosted","harvesting_status_bsi":true,"exemplary_image_ssi":"commonwealth:ww72bn94m","exemplary_image_key_base_ss":"images/commonwealth:ww72bn94m","admin_set_name_ssi":"Norman B.
