Seth Pomeroy Collection

Commissioned as Captain of Snow Shoe Men
A collection of original manuscripts and documents relating to Seth Pomeroy (1706-1777), an American gunsmith and soldier from Northampton, Massachusetts. His military service included serving as a Major in King George's War, and as a Lieutenant in the French and Indian War (where he was the only surviving officer in the Battle of Lake George) and the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. At 70 years old, he answered the call and fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill and was later appointed a major general in the Massachusetts militia. This collection includes a journal that Pomeroy kept during the French and Indian War, with descriptions of his time at Fortress Louisbourg in Nova Scotia in 1745 and the 1755 march to New York to support a move to capture Crown Point.
Many of the items in the collection were bound into a folio in 1904 under the direction of Dodd, Mead & Co. It includes commissions, military orders, military letters and reports, muster rolls, accounts, receipts, biographical material, deeds, and letters to and from his wife, Mary Hunt Pomeroy (1705-1777). The collection was donated to the Forbes Library in 1925 by the Honorable George Eltweed Pomeroy of Toledo, Ohio, a lineal descendant of Major General Pomeroy.
