Die Transvestiten, Magnus Hirschfeld
This collection includes the first and second editions of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld's seminal text, Die Transvestiten, published in German in 1910 and 1912, respectively. The 1912 edition includes illustrations by Max Tilke. In these texts, Hirschfeld coins the term "transvestite" (German: Transvestit) differentiating between sexual deviance and alternative gender expressions, which had previously been framed as the same condition. From our contemporary standpoint, the accounts of gender diversity represented in this work showcase a variety of locations along a transgender spectrum, far beyond what we now understand to be "cross-dressing." However, Hirschfeld had only just coined the term "transvestite" and would not use other categorical terms like transsexual until the 1920's.
