Discharge papers for Arthur J. Largesse, a private in the first Massachusetts regiment of Heavy Artillery. Discharge was formalized on the July 22, 1899 due to the reason of business engagements. Enlistment terms in the Massachusetts Militia has varied over the years. During the 1890's enlistments were typically for three years. However, during time of war, the duration of enlistment was at the convenience of the Government, and after the Spanish-American War of 1898, many soldiers of the militia were discharged.
