Description
Chief Sholan, or Nashacowam, and Sagamore Sam of the Nashaway Indian Tribe passing the deed to the land that makes up Lancaster to the Colonists during Episode 2, Settlement of Lancaster, in the Lancaster, Massachusetts 1912 Fourth of July Pageant. The purchase of the eighty square miles that made up Lancaster took place sometime between 1643 and 1653. Local tradition says that part of the purchase price was a gallon of rum and two black bulls. Chief Sholan, played by William J. McLeod, is shown standing over a table made from a split log with Sagamore Sam, played by Emory Little. Ralph Houghton the Clerk of Writs, played by Edward L. Brockelmann, John Prescott, played by Rev. Abbott Peterson and Hooker Osgood, played by Arthur G. Chickering represent the Colonists. The rest of the Colonists gather in a semi-circle around the proceedings.

Pageant at Lancaster, Massachusetts, July 4, 1912. Settlement.
The magistrate of the settlement, the chief man of the town, and the Hymn-singer arrive, and gather all the whites together and lead in the singing of a hymn from the "Bay Psalm Book."
After this the Indians advance with tenders of friendship, and the magistrate submits a document for the signature of the Indian chiefs. In return he gives money, two bullocks, and a jog of rum. Dinner is then served, and drink (sack) is passed around.
