The Colonial Revival style brick school was built in 1902, and extensively remodeled in 1925, at which time its hip roof and a large columned portico was removed. A classroom wing was also added. The school was named for an 1871 grammar school which had been located nearby on Franklin Street. The Franklin school closed in 2004.
