Description

Residential and commercial mill buildings ca 1888 in the Woodville section of Hopkinton, currently in the location of Lake Whitehall. The Whitehall Reservation was established in 1846 and mills utilized water power created by small dams. When the image was made three small ponds were joined by brooks. This was prior to 1895 when Massachusetts took over of the waterways and a larger dam was built leading to the creation of Lake Whitehall. When the Metropolitan Water Works of Boston acquired the lake, land and water rights, it brought mills and manufacturing in that area to a halt. These houses were torn down or relocated.
