An impressive dual cp. remony took I
place at the Phare de France yesterday
afternoon when a plaque was dedicated
to the memory of the late Jean ·
Jules Jusserand, former French ain · I
bassador at Washington and at the I
same time Princess Margaret Boncompagr.
l, the former Miss Margaret
Draper, was marie an officer of the
Legion of Honor by Marshal petaln.
A dlstinruished gathering, including
Ambt'. ssador Jesse Isidor StraW!, Mme. I
Jusserand, and Princess Nicholas of
Greece ( Grand Duchess Helen of Russla),
was present at the ceremony which
began with the presentation by J.
Ridgely Carter, general secretary of the
Phate de France, of MIles. Louise Tbu ·
llez and Jeanne de Bellevllle who, with
Edith Cavell, were condemned to be sbot
by a Germal'l war councll and whose
lives were spared through the intervention
of M. JUl; serand, then French
ambassador at · Washington.

ambassador's widoW, In a brief speech

imprisonment.
The plaque, a simple engraving, JUl! serand's
name, was then dedicated at
the entrance of the bulldlng. Follow ·

addrE: ss wherefn, prior to · bestowIn"
on Princess Boncompagnl the accolade
of an officer of the Legion of
Honor, he outlined her achievements
in meriting this distinction. Princess
Boncompagni, dressed in a black and S
green printed dres..~, made a brief
speech thanking the marshal:-
" It is with great emotion that I have
just rp. celved from your hands the distinction
which has been conferred on
me by the government of the Re ·
public. The memory will be doubly
precious because it has been conferred
on me by you. I am very happy to
give my collaboration to the Phare de
France and to aid · those of my i: Ompatriots
who are devoted to this fine
charity for the victim/! · of the war who
. are now I'Urrounded with shadows. We
are going through difficult times and
our task is not finished, but we are
looking to the future with hope and
confidence."
