Description

Lydia Maria Child, sister of Convers Francis, minister of the First Parish in Watertown, was a novelist, editor, journalist and scholar. She authored "Over the river and through the wood . . . " Lydia Child resided with her brother in 1824 when she started a private school in Watertown. In 1826, she began the publication of the Juvenile Miscellany, the first monthly periodical for children issued in the United States, and supervised it for eight years. Lydia Child taught school until 1828, when she married Boston lawyer David Lee Child. he began in 1825 to study law with his uncle, Tyler Bigelow, in Watertown, Massachusetts, and was admitted to the bar.
