Description
Next AT&T, later Tufts Health Plan on Mount Auburn Street. Western Electric was founded in 1882 to manufacture electronic apparatus of resale to Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company. In 1931 Western Electric Co. out grew its original facility in South Boston and purchased the Coolidge farm on Mt. Auburn Street (the Coolidge homestead was moved to Arlington Street and is now the Elks Club). The building was constructed of reinforced concrete with limestone trim. In 1980, 812 people were employed here. The Company sponsored the Junior Achievement Company to teach junior and senior high school students about business as well as supporting the Boys and Girls' Club, the Jaycees, United Fund, U.S. Bond Drive, the Red Cross Blood Drive and other local organizations.
