Description
Theodore Parker's school at the corner of Galen and Maple Street. On the premises of the house were he was boarding, was an old bakery building which had formally been John Hunt's shop, and in whose upper story had only a short time before, been used for a boy's school, taught by Mr. Wilder of Brighton. This room was leased and opened a school with two pupils -one was said to be a charity pupil. By the end of the year he had thirty-five and afterwards fifty-four pupils. He kept school for two years teaching all common branches and those studies necessary for college admission. Parker taught for two years, to make enough money to permit him to pursue theological studies. He met his future wife, Lydia D. Cabot, at the boarding house where he lived. Parker also preached in Town Hall and was a friend of Convers Francis. For more information read "Life and correspondence of Theodore Parker" by John Weiss. Photograph of ink drawing.
