Description

Oliver Wendell Holmes was a member of the Class of 1825 sent to school here by his father Abiel, a trustee of the Academy from 1809 through 1837. Holmes went on to become a physician, professor, author and inventor. He was also the father of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. the Supreme Court Justice and Civil War veteran. Holmes went in search of his son after hearing he had been wounded through the neck at Keedysville. His essay "My Hunt after the Captain" relates the experience. It was the third wound the young Holmes had received during the war and the most serious.
