Description

Image of Joe and Jerry, the William Whiting Coal Company’s cart horses. The note affixed to the photograph states that the name of the two horses are Joe and Jerry. They weigh 3400 pounds and were sold at auction by the Hick’s Brothers to the W.B. Whiting Coal Company on April of 1907 for $1,000. The horses, dressed in their harnesses complete with horse brasses that are emblazoned with the company’s logo, are set to pull the coal wagon. The driver sits behind the horses while a man in a bowler stands beside the coal wagon. This may be Edward G. Whiting, owner and proprietor of the company. The coal wagon stands in front of William B. Whiting Coal Co’s headquarters on the corner of Elm and Hampshire.
