I saw a lady not long since that knew my mother, she used to live in East Charlemont I think on the place that Thomas Judd used to live. She is a widow lady by the name of Sayers, and a very nice lady she is, she used to know the Trowbridges. I have a great many friends in this place and they are of the first class. Mary and I are members of the first class society, where I know you want us to be. I tell Mary that I thank my father for not liking low society any better, for he did not like for me to go with the High Streeters. I thank you father for all of your advise [sic], and all I am sorry for is that I did not obey you better than I did. Good night and may God bless you one and all is my prayer.

I will commence another sheet and perhaps may have time to finish. I do wish it could be so that you could answer this and send back by the bearer of this, but as you cannot I hope you will send one some way. Won't you Mary must write. Jane I suppose is so occupied with her children that she has time for nothing else. Gardner wrote me that she had two. What is the other one's name, also his boy's name? Kiss Fiddie for me. How many children has Uncle Charles now? Several of course. I hope he has a boy by this time for he was so disappointed when the second was born. Are those maple trees that Joseph and I planted still alive? I hope they are. My health has not been as good as it used to be since I was in the army. I came
