Dear Friend Howard,
Rec'd. your letter tonight so will try & scribble you a few lines. Have you ever rec'd either of the cards I sent you last summer? Have been trans. from that city where we were all summer, back up in-to the north-eastern part of the country & like it much better. It is more of a farming country & they have some pretty good herds of cattle & sheep. Guess George can tell you when he gets my last letter about the fair or market day they had in the city where I was last week. Never saw such a sight in my life.
This city is set right in between the hills & I guess it is about as old as they are. The streets are very narrow & dark as that road over by ‘Gords’ whip-but shanty. They have street lights here but have never seen them lit up. The streets are all stone & you can hear a person walking on them for a mile. The people all wear wooden shoes & they make more noise than a whole Reg. of A. [regiment of army] soldiers would walking. You had ought to see the saw-mills they have in this place. push the carriage by hand & sometimes they have to turn the saw by hand. Everything is about a hundred years behind hand but guess they will catch up after this war is over.
