Description
The cover of the August, 1912 of the Worcester Magazine with a Scene from "The Ransom of Mary Rowlandson," an historical episode of the July 4th Celebration in Worcester, Massachusetts. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century a nation-wide movement to curb riotous and potentially dangerous celebrations of the Fourth of July holiday and promote "Safe and Sane" alternatives gained momentum. As a result, many communities sponsored parades, picnics, and historical pageants and tableaux such as that seen here.
