Description
Patrons engrossed in reading materials in the reference department at the Worcester Public Library in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Worcester Public Library was established in 1859 by Dr. John Green who donated his private library of over 7,000 volumes, "in trust for the free use of the citizens and public forever." Dr. Green's nephew, Samuel Swett Green, who served as the Worcester Librarian was a founder of the American Library Association and is widely considered to be one of the earliest advocates for free reference and information services in the public Library setting.
