Description
This photograph shows all the spectacularly-costumed participants in a staged 1771 wedding, part of an elaborate pageant during Williamsburg's 1921 150th anniversary celebration. Among those returning to town for the occasion was photographer Jessie Tarbox Beals, who had lived in Williamsburg as a girl and taught school here in the 1890s before taking up photography as a career. By 1921 she was well established as America's first female professional photojournalist, covering the activities of presidents and major events of the era. This print, mounted on a thin grey paperboard backing, measures 7.1 x 9.5 inches.
