Description

Circa 1830's two-piece wooden shaving box measuring 4-3/8 inches in diameter by 1-3/4 inches high is attributed to Buckland, Mass. native Ezra Wood (1798-1841).

There is a round paper label adhered to the cover that reads, Ezra Wood. Manufacturer Buckland Mss. The label also includes the printed names and figurative seals of the thirteen original states. Starting at the top and going clockwise they are: Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. In the center of the label, under a cherub-type angel holding a banner reading Washington & Lafayette, are portraits of Revolutionary War General and first U.S. President, George Washington (1732-1799), and the marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834), the wealthy French man who fought along side Washington. Spirit of 76 appears in a rectangle under the portraits.

Ezra Wood was born in Buckland, Mass. on 2 December 1798, a twin son of John and Susannah (Temple) Wood. He lived in the Four-Corners section of Buckland where he made wooden shaving and lather boxes, as well as combs and wooden hair curlers called crimpers. Wood was also a talented silhouette artist. His other occupations included merchant, inn keeper, and seller of liquor. Wood died in Buckland, Mass. on 12 June 1841 at the age of 46. He is buried in Buckland's Old Cemetery Number One, located on the east side of the Congregational church in Buckland Center.
