Description

Photograph of Dr. Clayton R. Myers, circa 2007. Clayton Myers grew up involved in the Camden (N.J.) YMCA. After completing service in the Navy during World War II, he enrolled at Springfield College and eventually earned his Ph.D. at Ohio State University. He worked in youth and fitness program positions at YMCAs in New York City, Jamestown, N.Y. and at YMCA of the Oranges (N.J.). Myers served 12 years on the Ohio-West Virginia YMCA staff as regional associate for health and physical education.
In 1976, he was appointed director of the Nationwide YMCA Cardiovascular Health Program. Myers developed a multi-level national system of training, certification, and support for fitness specialists. He was the guiding force behind the “Y’s Way to Physical Fitness,” an instructor guidebook first published in 1973. He also created the Y Cardiac Therapy Program, a revolutionary approach to treat patients in a non-medical facility. He organized two YMCA Cardiovascular Health Consultations attended by experts from around the world. Myers was honored with the Roberts-Gulick Award, the Paul Dudley White Award for Physical Fitness Leadership, and the YMCA of the USA Healthy Lifestyle Exemplary Leadership Award.
