Physical exertion was the rule rather than the exception, and the fact that these were women, not men, made no difference. In 1914 the Passage of Smith Lever Act to develop Cooperative Agriculture Extension work. Department of Household Arts is asked to train women to develop 4H clubs and farm programs. Hard work was a daily part of life, and when students were finished in the field they were expected to engage in recreational exercise. Students grew their own vegetables to help in meal preparation.
