Three black and white & tinted photographs 28 x 25 cm.-41 x 51 cm. in a phase box. - Auburndale is a Newton, Massachusetts village which was settled around 1678. The main impetus to growth was the extension of the railroad by 1837. Auburndale became a suburban commuter community with the added attraction of the Charles River and the Newton Street Railway's opening of Norumbega Park. Auburndale Square (generally Melrose, Ash and Lexington Streets) was its major commercial center and still is today. West Newton, another village of Newton, Massachusetts developed after North Street was built in 1761 to span the Charles River, thus connecting Newton and Waltham, Mass. A road was extended from the river to join the roads leading to Watertown, Natick and Weston. The junction of these roads became West Newton Square. The center of this new village attracted churches, taverns, stage coach, then train connections and the Town Hall in 1849. - View of square with many stores, five pedestrians, a horse, wagon, automobile at the curb.
