Description

A cabinet card photograph of William G. Morgan, inventor of volleyball. William G. Morgan attended Mount Hermon School in Northfield Massachusetts in 1891. Records at Mount Hermon indicate that Morgan interrupted his course of study by withdrawing from the school in October, 1892 - just four days after meeting Naismith's team on the football field. In 1892-93 Morgan attended Springfield College, or the International YMCA Training School as it was called then, and is pictured with the Training School's football team along with Coach Naismith. Morgan's preparation at the Springfield College allowed him to enter YMCA work and by 1895 William Morgan had returned to Western Massachusetts to work at the Holyoke YMCA.

In addition to balancing his new profession in YMCA work he began to look for an innovative game for the local businessmen to play. He thought basketball was too strenuous for them, so he blended elements of basketball, tennis, and handball and called his invention "mintonette'. Morgan borrowed the net from a tennis court and raised it 6 feet 6 inches, a head above the average man's height. A new sport was born - Volleyball.
